It was a weekend of mixed results for the Spotswood FNC senior teams, finishing with two wins and two losses, but plenty of positives to take away across the board.

The round kicked off in great style with our Thirds taking on Sunshine in their first game of the season. A fantastic atmosphere in the rooms before the match carried onto the field, resulting in an impressive 99-point victory for the new-look Woodsmen. Corey Thomas was outstanding up forward, lighting up Donald McLean Reserve with six goals.

Saturday morning saw the Under 18 Division 1 side travel to Werribee for Round 2. Werribee is always a strong Division 1 outfit, and this year is no different. In a tight and hard-fought contest, Spotswood led by four points at both quarter time and half time, before scores were level at the final break. The boys showed great composure to finish strongly, securing a two-goal win and remaining undefeated after two rounds. Beau Lagos, Rex Spilane-Russo and Cohen Bentley each kicked two goals, while Ashton Heriot was rock solid in defence.

Saturday afternoon proved more challenging, with both the Seniors and Reserves facing last year’s grand finalists, Caroline Springs, away from home. The Reserves battled hard but found it tough going, with Tiger Mitchem kicking the side’s only goal in an 89-point loss.

The Seniors showed patches of strong football, particularly in the second quarter where they matched it with the Lakers. However, Caroline Springs made the most of their home ground advantage, using the wide spaces effectively. Despite the final margin of 74 points, there were still positives, with Harley Walshe and captain David Iaccarino kicking two goals each, and Sam Leitch earning Best on Ground honours for Spotswood.

Looking ahead, the Thirds travel to Truganina on Friday night, while the Seniors, Reserves and Under 18 Division 1 sides take on Altona on Anzac Day. The Under 18 Division 2 team will also face Sunshine.
